This is not groovy. Ash Vs. Evil Dead has officially been canceled by Starz. The series has been on the bubble for a bit now, with the cast, crew and fans awaiting word on whether or not the Evil Dead series would be given a season 4. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen. The upcoming Ash vs. Evil Dead season 3 finale is now planned as the series finale. Bruce Campbell, who reprised his role as Ash on the series, took to Twitter to share this message after the news broke.

"Ash Vs Evil Dead has been the ride of a lifetime. Ash Williams was the role of a lifetime. I will always be grateful to Starz, Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and our tireless fans for the opportunity to revisit the franchise that launched our careers. Thank you!"

Fans of Ash vs. Evil Dead are heartbroken with this news, which likely comes as a surprise to them, but from the network's perspective, it's not nearly as surprising. Starz hasn't enjoyed massive ratings for Ash vs. Evil Dead and, given that it's a special effects-heavy show, it also isn't the cheapest thing to produce. Even though die-hard fans are there, the ratings aren't and that makes it much harder to justify keeping a show on the air. Ash vs. Evil Dead season 3 saw a steep decline, earning an average of just 177,000 viewers per episode.

Bruce Campbell was vocal about calling out those who were pirating the show online instead of actually supporting it, warning that it could doom the series. Evil Dead gave director Sam Raimi, who serves as an executive producer on the series and helped create Ash vs. Evil Dead, his start, alongside Bruce Campbell. The pair reunited for Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, before continuing the legacy of those movies on the small screen with this series years later. The series also stars Lucy Lawless, Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo.

Netflix recently began offering the first two seasons of the show for their subscribers, which has helped expose it to a wider audience. Netflix helped shows like Riverdale explode with better ratings in its second season. Unfortunately for Ash vs. Evil Dead, it may have been a case of too little too late. Still, many fans took to social media to beg Netflix to pick up the series for another season in the wake of the news that it's been canceled.

Something like that isn't totally out of the realm of possibility, but there's no indication it's going to happen, or even can happen. Bruce Campbell did tease that Evil Dead 4 might be possible if Ash vs. Evil Dead were canceled, but that seems unlikely. Unless a streaming service like Netflix does come in and save the day, it looks like this may really be goodbye for Ash Williams. Starz will air the Season 3 finale on Sunday, April 29.
