Almost exactly one year after Katie Cassidy's character Laurel Lance, a.k.a. the Black Canary, was killed off in an Arrow Season 4 episode, the beloved actress is returning to the series. It has been confirmed that Katie Cassidy will be back as the Black Siren, appearing in the final two episodes of Arrow Season 5, before returning as a series regular in Arrow Season 6.

"One of the things that most excites us about Arrow is that we go where the story takes us. Last year, the story took us to the tragic death of Laurel Lance. This year, our midseason finale reintroduced us to Laurel's doppelgänger, Black Siren. We were so taken by Katie's fearless interpretation of this character that we knew her story was not yet finished. We couldn't be more thrilled to welcome Katie back to Arrow as Black Siren, though as her appearances on Arrow and DC's Legends of Tomorrow this season show, she never really left the family."

Entertainment Weekly broke the news of Katie Cassidy's return, although the site didn't have any details about how Black Siren's return will affect the current Black Canary, Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy), who is now part of Team Arrow and has a Canary Cry. Black Siren was last seen in the mid-season premiere, Who Are You?, where she was locked up in an A.R.G.U.S. facility after she tried to kill Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards). Here's what executive producer Marc Guggenheim told EW after the mid-season premiere aired.

"The episode ends with laying a very specific seed with a very specific game plan on our part that we hope to see come to fruition."

Despite being killed off on Arrow, it was revealed at Comic-Con that Katie Cassidy signed a deal with The CW, that allowed her to be a series regular on all of The CW's superhero shows, such as Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl. Other CW stars such as Wentworth Miller and John Barrowman have similar deals intact, that allow them to freely move from one show to the next, although they have primarily appeared on Legends of Tomorrow, where their characters Captain Cold and Malcolm Merlyn help form the Legion of Doom. Cassidy will next be seen on the Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 finale, entitled Aruba, which airs Tuesday, April 4 at 9 PM ET on The CW.

It remains to be seen if Katie Cassidy's return as an Arrow series regular will mean that she'll be unable to cross over onto shows like Legends of Tomorrow, through her deal with The CW Network. Regardless, Arrow will certainly be delighted to have her back. The final two episodes of Arrow Season 5 are slated to debut Wednesday, May 17 and Wednesday, May 24 on The CW. This season continues with the 18th episode, Disbanded, which airs Wednesday, March 29 at 8 PM ET on The CW.
