For many '90s kids, Nickelodeon's Are You Afraid of the Dark? served as an introduction to the horror genre. It was basically the kid-friendly version of anthology horror shows like Tales from the Crypt, presenting a separate spooky story each week. Although many fans who enjoyed watching the series as a kid have grown up and moved on to R-rated horror movies, fans still remember Are You Afraid of the Dark? with fond nostalgia. Perhaps recognizing the past success of the series, Nickelodeon's new programming strategy includes bringing the show back to the network as an all new miniseries, along with the sketch comedy show All That. While the revival might serve as the first horror programming seen by a new generation of viewers, fans of the original iteration may find this exciting as well.
The series originally ran on Nickelodeon from 1990 to 1996. It focused on a group of friends calling themselves the Midnight Society, with each of the members sneaking out at night to their private meeting spot in the woods. In each episode, one of the members of the group would tell an original scary story. Some of the tales were pretty out there if not outright ridiculous, while others were genuinely rather creepy. While details are scarce about the upcoming Nickelodeon revival, we can expect that it will feature a new Midnight Society presenting their own original stories around the campfire.
This won't be the first revival for the series. In 1999, Nickelodeon brought the show back with all new writers and directors. Only one of the original members of the Midnight Society returned, as Daniel DeSanto reprised the role of Tucker for the limited run revival. The show was not as successful the second time around, and the series was canceled again the following year. Perhaps absence makes the heart grow fonder, as nearly two decades after the last iteration of the show, Nickelodeon is choosing to bring it back once again.
As previously announced, feature film adaptation of the anthology series will hit the big screen this fall. Directed by D.J. Caruso and penned by It writer Gary Dauberman, the movie will tell an original story rather than rehashing something we've already seen on the show. Full details on the plot aren't clear, but like on the TV series, we can expect to see a group of spooky storytellers called the Midnight Society regaling scary stories around a campfire. It has yet to be confirmed whether the adaptation will be an anthology movie or if it will consist of a single horror story.
Nickelodeon has not yet set an official premiere date for the Are You Afraid of the Dark? miniseries. Reportedly, it will coincide with the release of the movie adaptation, which hits theaters on Oct. 4 of this year. We can expect the revival to air on Nickelodeon around that same time.
