With Breaking Bad on its final season, and today's cancellation of The Killing, AMC will have a few holes in its lineup in the near future. The network is developing a new series about Area 51 that could fill one of the voids in their schedule.

The network has finalized a deal to develop the project, based on a book by Annie Jacobsen entitled Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base. Area 51 is a secretive branch of the Edwards Air Force Base, located 75 miles west of Las Vegas in the Nevada desert.

It has been rumored for years that this is where the government is keeping alien creatures and artifacts from the Roswell, New Mexico crash site in 1947. AMC executive Joel Stillerman revealed that the series will be set in the 1950s, and will stick closely to the book. The story follows the Area 51 workers who help guard the nation's biggest secrets.

The Walking Dead producer Gale Anne Hurd has signed on to executive produce, with Todd Ellis Kessler on board as a writer.
