Is it possible that a show set in the Alien universe is being considered? Before digging into this one at all, we have to caution pretty heavily that this is merely a rumor for now. It hasn't been corroborated by any official sources from Fox or anyone who might potentially be involved. That said, according to a new report, there is at least a possibility that an Alien TV series is on the table and may be in the very early stages of development.
Ridley Scott's Alien celebrates its 40th anniversary next year. Unfortunately, the franchise isn't exactly in the greatest place right now. Alien: Covenant, the follow-up to Prometheus, was released last year and, despite the fact that the marketing campaign had fans revved up, the movie was a crushing disappointment at the box office and wound up being pretty divisive. Even though Scott insists that he has a third movie in the works, Fox doesn't seem eager to pull the trigger. Point being, it doesn't look like we're getting a new movie any time soon.
So, what to do with a beloved franchise that is just lying dormant? Turning it into a TV series is one way to go about it and, according to Omega Underground, it's at least being considered. Unfortunately, there are virtually no details available, but it's likely that this series wouldn't just be a Xenomorph parade. Even though the terrifying creatures are a large part of what makes Alien and Aliens so special to many, it's not terribly practical to make a series so focused on such an effects-heavy subject. Not only that, but stretched out over the course of ten episodes or more, it could get pretty un-special very quickly.
That said, there is a lot to explore in that universe. Perhaps the show could explore a colony on a distant planet that faces other horrifying challenges that come with living in space? Maybe it could be focused on the Colonial Marines from Aliens? There are certainly ways to make something like this work on the small screen and Fox has a history of turning their big screen franchises into shows. Planet of the Apes, The Exorcist, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and a pair of X-Men universe shows, Legion and The Gifted, are just some examples. So why not an Alien TV series?
On paper, it seems logical enough. The report does state that the platform hasn't been determined. That could be an important sticking point. Disney is currently close to purchasing the majority of Fox's media assets, including all of 20th Century Fox. That would include the Alien franchise. That leaves us with one of two options: either Fox is going to get this series done before the deal is complete with Disney or, seemingly less likely, the Mouse House will producer the show for their streaming service, which launches next year.
One thing that has always been a bit uncertain was how Disney will handle things like Alien. It's very off-brand for them. That makes it far less likely this will get produced under their reign, but who knows? They need content for the streaming service, one way or another. In any case, the idea of a show set in the Alien universe is at the very least intriguing and could be something flashy to announce for the 40th anniversary next year. Maybe it's no more than a rumor for now, but it's at least worth thinking about. This comes to us courtesy of Omega Underground.
