It's a special day for the longtime host of Jeopardy! as fans are celebrating Alex Trebek for his 80th birthday. For decades, Trebek has been a fixture in the homes of families everywhere with a constant presence on the popular game show with millions of fans playing along with the contestants from the comfort of their own living rooms. With Trebek turning 80, fans have been taking to social media to wish him a happy birthday, noting their love for the television star along with more well wishes with his continued battle against cancer.
Trebek's big day comes just after the release of his new memoir, entitled The Answer Is... : Reflections on My Life. Detailing Trebek's personal life in addition to his legendary (and still ongoing) run as the host of Jeopardy, the book gives fans insight into his views on parenthood, education, marriage, spirituality, success, and more. He also touches on some of the most talked about moments from his career, such as the winning streaks of Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer along with his opinion of Will Ferrell's famous Celebrity Jeopardy impersonation from Saturday Night Live.
In March of 2019, Alex Trebek first revealed to his fans that he had been diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. Addressing Jeopardy fans directly, Trebek acknowledged the very low odds of survival but insisted that he would aggressively fight the disease. "I've lived a good life, a full life, and I'm nearing the end of that life," Trebek said in an interview last year, noting that he wasn't afraid of dying. Despite the illness, Trebek also said he would continue to host new episodes of Jeopardy for the foreseeable future, expressing his desire to continue on as long as he is physically able to do the show.
In March 2020, Trebek provided a one-year update to his fans concerning his diagnosis, celebrating his survival and noting that he had already beaten the odds by surviving a year. The Jeopardy host also said he was confident he would survive another year, unwilling to let down his friends, family, and fans whom have continued to support him and pray for his recovery. As of this month, Trebek's chemotherapy treatments are "paying off" according to the television legend, and he is eager to get back into the studio to resume filming new episodes of Jeopardy. After shooting some episodes with no audience in the studio, production of the series had been paused earlier this year.
Hosting Jeopardy since 1984, Trebek has led 8,132 episodes of the long-running trivia-based game show. The impressive run has made Trebek one of the world's most recognizable celebrities with fans across the globe. His work has also resulted in seven Emmy Award wins for Outstanding Game Show Host, earning his newest one just this year. Additionally, he has been given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Daytime Emmy Awards and has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
