The next Adventure Time special has been revealed. During a special [email protected] panel, it was confirmed that Adventure Time: Distant Lands Obsidian will be heading to HBO Max. While much remains secretive, the special will focus on Marceline and Princess Bubblegum. The relationship between the two was confirmed toward the end of the show's original run. Now, we will be exploring that further in a brand new special.

Artwork for the Adventure Time special was revealed during the panel as well, which we've included for you to check out. The panel was moderated by Michaela Dietz, who plays Amethyst on Steven Universe. Adam Muto (executive producer), Glory Curda (Y5), Olivia Olson (Marceline) and Niki Yang (BMO). joined the conversation. Speaking about Adventure Time Distant Lands: Obsidian, Olson had this to say.

"The way that the finale ended was just so perfect. Even though it was the confirmation that the fans were so desperate to see for so long, it also was this moment that might have not happened unless the circumstances were so high in the Gum War. So that sort of just opened the doorway for them to have a discussion of, 'We need to talk about our relationship that we have,' and see where they take it from there. It was really cool to be able to see some of the things that happened in the past between and how it will affect their future moving forward."

The Distant Lands specials are based on the acclaimed animated series by show creator Pendleton Ward and executive producer Adam Muto. The four specials, which kicked off earlier this year with one centered on BMO, will explore the unseen corners of the world with both familiar and exciting brand-new characters. Speaking further, Olivia Olson shared her praise for the script.

"I was really, really excited when I read the script. I think the way that they executed this storyline with Obsidian is gonna be really satisfying for the fans, to tick off a lot of questions that they've had."

Plot details for this HBO Max special are largely being kept under wraps. But asked about the meaning behind the name Obsidian, Adam Muto offered a little bit of what to expect. For one, Muto revealed that the special will be taking us to a new location never before seen on Adventure Time, the Glass Kingdom.

"It had a lot to do with the setting because it takes place near a place that we haven't shown on the show previously called the Glass Kingdom. Obsidian is a type of natural glass. Spiritually, it can be protective and absorb negativity. But it can also be weaponized as an actual material. It has those elements to it that a lot of characters within the show are exhibiting in this episode."

Olivia Olson also sang a new song called Monster that will be part of the special. For those who wish to check it out, it starts at around the 35:10 mark of the [email protected] panel video. No release date for Adventure Time Distant Lands: Obsidian has been revealed yet. You can check out the panel in its entirety from the Comic-Con International YouTube channel.
