There's plenty more new episodes of 13 Reasons Why on the way, as Netflix has ordered a fourth and final season ahead of the premiere of season 3. The streaming service also released a new trailer for season 3, which has been given a release date for Aug. 23. Both seasons will have creator Brian Yorkey returning as showrunner to give the depressing story a proper conclusion. Season 3 will consist of 13 episodes and follows the death of another major character, which is revealed in the footage.

Based on the 2007 novel by Jay Asher, 13 Reasons Why tells the story of teenage girl Hannah Baker's suicide. In a series of thirteen cassette tapes left behind, Hannah provides the different reasons she chose to end her life. The dark series concluded its first season with a graphic scene depicting Hannah's suicide, which has since been edited out of the episode because of its controversial nature. Because of the first season's success, Netflix ordered another season of 13 Reasons Why, further exploring the aftermath of the suicide as Hannah's case goes to trial. The season had a controversial ending of its own, concluding with Clay (Dylan Minnette) preventing a high school shooting.

Season 3 is set eight months after the events of season 2. Clay, Tony, Jessica, Alex, Justin, and Zach now are trying to find ways to shoulder the burden of the cover-up together while helping Tyler move toward recovery. But when the aftermath of a tumultuous Homecoming game culminates in the disappearance of a football player, and Clay finds himself under police scrutiny, it's up to a shrewd outsider to steer the group through an investigation that threatens to lay bare everyone's deepest secrets. It's really starting to seem like the young people in this town just absolutely cannot seem to catch a break.

Full details on the fourth and final season have not yet been made available, so as not to spoil what's to come for 13 Reasons Why later this month. What has been reported is that season 4 will focus on the core cast's graduation from Liberty High, but given what's been happening with every other season, the characters probably won't be walking the aisle before another major tragedy unfolds. The series has certainly been a compelling watch, but for the sake of the unfortunate characters on the show, it's probably best to end the show sooner rather than later so these poor kids can all move on with their lives.

As noted above, you can catch the third season of 13 Reasons Why when it premieres in its entirety on Netflix on Aug. 23. As for season 4, there's no word yet on when it will possibly be released, though it will likely arrive sometime in 2020. Hopefully, the depressing series will somehow manage to be brought to an end with a satisfying conclusion. This news comes to us from Deadline.
