During the Hall H panel for The Walking Dead at Comic-Con earlier this month, it was revealed that Emmy winner Merritt Wever and Ethan Embry have signed on, but it wasn't revealed who they are playing, and if their characters are from the original comic books by Robert Kirkman. Today, Entertainment Weekly has the first photos of these new cast members, revealing that Merritt Wever is playing Dr. Denise Cloyd from the comics, while Ethan Embry is portraying Carter. We also have a new photo of Corey Antonio Hawkins' Heath, who was introduced last month.

In the comics, Dr. Denise Cloyd is an Alexandria resident who is the town's chief medic, a role that becomes "critical" in Season 6, after the death of Pete (Corey Brill), another doctor, in The Walking Dead Season 5 finale. In the comic book, her surgical skills are put to the test after a gruesome injury, which "may or may not happen" in the TV series. As for Ethan Embry's Carter, showrunner Scott M. Gimple revealed that the character is actually a hybrid of several characters from the comics who haven't been featured on the show yet.

"Ethan plays a combo of a few characters that we actually haven't hit yet or weren't able to hit in other characters. He is an Alexandrian, and has been there the whole time, just quite busy."

We got a glimpse of Carter in the The Walking Dead Season 6 trailer that debuted at SDCC, where he appears to be convincing the rest of Alexandria that Rick (Andrew Lincoln) is not right for this peaceful town. The final new photo gives us another look at Heath, who, in the comics, is romantically linked to Denise. It isn't known if this supply-runner will be romantically involved with the doctor in the series, but executive producer Denise M. Huth had nothing but high praise for Corey Antonio Hawkins. Here's what she had to say below.

"He's terrific and I'm so excited to see him bring Heath to life. It's been fun and he dove in with both feet. He's tough and skeptical when the cameras are rolling, and then when they're off he's just like a goofy fan. He's really, really excited to be there."

A few weeks before Comic-Con, we reported that the show is casting for two more new characters, the married couple Kirk and Hilda. There are no characters in the comics named Kirk and Hilda, but fans have already speculated that this couple could be Dwight and Sherry. While that may be possible, the couple do not surface in the comics until after the villainous Negan is introduced, which hasn't happened on the show yet.

The Walking Dead will return with Season 6 on Sunday, October 11 at 9 PM ET on AMC, followed by the live after-show Talking Dead. Fans will also get a different perspective on the zombie apocalypse with the spinoff series Fear the Walking Dead, set in Los Angeles, which debuts August 23. While we wait for more details on both of these shows, check out the new photos from Season 6 of The Walking Dead.
