The mystery surrounding True Detective and its impending Season 2 is beginning to crack open. As of now, we know nothing solid, but a report from The Warp teases that new episodes will revolve around a single male character with a number of male and female roles serving as back-up. Apparently the first script is complete.

This goes against earlier reports that True Detective Season 2 would have three lead characters, with creator Nic Pizzolatto explaining how the new series was going to work. And it was teased that one of the main characters would be a female, with the action taking place in the seedier, more unseen side of California.

"Right now, we're working with three leads. It takes place in California. Not Los Angeles, but some of the lesser known venues of California and we're going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambience of the place, much like we did with season one. The characters are all new, but I am deeply in love with all of them. We have the entire season broken out, and I have a couple of scripts, and we'll probably start casting within the coming month."

Its not known why the change was made from three leads to one, or if that's really even the plan. Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain were said to be early front runners for leading the new season, but those reports have since been called untrue. Matthew McConaughey, who starred alongside Woody Harrelson in True Detective Season 1 has expressed his interest in returning to the series at some point, though he only signed on for the first 10 episodes.

"That was always how I saw it. One season, eight episodes, a finite beginning, middle and end, goodbye, look forward to watching it. If HBO had wanted an option on me for a season 2 or 3, I wouldn't have done it. I wouldn't have walked into something where they could say, 'We've got you for the next three years.' I liked True Detective the whole series and the experience of making it, so much that I'd be open to doing another one now. At the time, I was looking at six months and not beyond that. I don't know of a feature film I'd sign for where I'm going to say, 'If this works, you've got me whenever you want me for the next three years."

Is it possible that Matthew McConaughey has decided to come back by himself? We haven't heard a peep out of Woody Harrelson. Its unlikely either will return this early in the game, unless Rust Cohle is heading to California for a new case?

At this time, True Detective Season 2 has not been green lit by HBO. As soon as it if, we're sure we'll hear something substantial about its cast and plotline. Until that time, we'll just have to rewatch the original episodes over and over again like an obsessive psychopath.
