While HBO keeps threatening to release an official casting statement for True Detective Season 2, Colin Farrell has gone ahead and pulled the trigger himself, confirming that he will take on one of three lead roles when the series returns next year.
True Detective will be the actor's first foray into the world of television with a major recurring role on a series, though his involvement will last only one season. About appearing on the series, Colin Farrell stated:
"I'm doing the second series. I'm so excited."
Colin Farrell has been rumored for the series for most of the summer. The other male lead is said to be Taylor Kitsch, though his involvement has not been confirmed at this time.
Elisabeth Moss and Rachel McAdams were believed to be up for the lead female role, but earlier this month it was reported that seven more actresses were auditioning for the part, including Rosario Dawson, Jessica Biel, Malin Akerman, Jamie Alexander, Oona Chaplin, Brit Marling and Kelly Reilly.
Colin Farrell refused to divulge any character details, but did state that the series will resume shooting in a matter of months.
"I know it will be eight episodes and take around four or five months to shoot. I know very little about it, but we're shooting in the environs of Los Angeles which is great. It means I get to stay at home and see the kids."
While he wouldn't comment on his character, he did reveal why he wanted to take on the part:
"It's been shown time and time again how [channels like] HBO have raised the bar regarding production values and fundamentally the writing that all their shows are based on...It's extraordinary; it has reached a new level. You get to familiarize yourself with characters week after week. You get to build a life that takes a while to experience as an actor and also that takes a while to experience as a viewer. There's just a greater sense of life to it."
True Detective Season 2 is believed to take place in the lesser known areas of California and revolves around a high-speed railway system that will forever change public transportation in the state. Colin Farrell is rumored to be playing a detective named Ray Velcro who has gone through some very trying experiences in both his emotional and professional life.
