Netflix has renewed The Witcher for season 2. Henry Cavill has celebrated the news by sharing a new image from season one, which has yet to debut. The eight-episode second season will begin production in early 2020 with an aim for a 2021 release date. The first season will premiere on December 20th and fans of the franchise are looking forward to it and have been for quite some time now. Netflix has been doing a good job of teasing the series, especially with the latest trailer that dropped last month.

Henry Cavill's image from The Witcher is a new picture of his character Geralt. "As you may have heard, season 2 of The Witcher has been announced!" said Cavill on social media. "To mark the occasion I thought I'd share one of my favorite shots from my season 1 personal collection." It's unclear if the shot will end up in the first season or if it was just a picture taken specifically for the actor.

The Witcher is an attempt at Netflix trying to obtain their own Game of Thrones-type of show. The series was created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich who also serves as executive producer and showrunner. As for whether or not it will be able to get to the GOT numbers, that is unclear, but Netflix certainly has confidence in it. Schmidt Hissrich had this to say in the announcement for season 2.

"I'm so thrilled that before fans have even seen our first season, we are able to confirm that we'll be returning to The Continent again to continue telling the stories of Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri."

The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family, which is based on the fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski. Additionally, the stories have been adapted into a successful video game franchise too. The story of the intertwined destinies of three individuals in the vast world of The Continent, where humans, elves, witchers, gnomes, and monsters battle to survive and thrive, and where good and evil is not easily identified. The Netflix series is taking its storylines from the books, though it is imagined it will not be a direct adaptation.

Henry Cavill says his Geralt character has a hard exterior, but is only that way because he believed that is the way in which the world works. However, he believes deep down that the world can also change for the good. Will we see evidence of this in the first season of The Witcher? It seems logical that the first season will have a lot to do with Geralt and his personality, along with the way he acts to certain situations. Regardless, fans of the franchise are extremely excited that the show is finally coming. You can check out a new picture from The Witcher season 1 below, thanks to Henry Cavill's Instagram account.
