It was announced late last month that Supernatural Season 15 will be its last. Since then, fans have been trying to figure out why the hit CW series is coming to a close, especially after stars Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins shared an emotional video message in which they were choking back tears. Now, the stars have revealed that it was a "community decision" to end Supernatural next season, which shouldn't come as a shock to most fans of the long-running series.

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki spoke at a Supernatural convention in Las Vegas over the weekend and shed some more light on the decision to pull the plug on the hit show. When it comes down to it, the studio and network had nothing to do with the decision. If it were up to them, the show would probably go on for another 15 seasons. Ackles explains.

"It wasn't an easy decision. It was months and months, if not years, of discussion between he and I, between the rest of the cast, between the crew, between our writers, between our producers, between the studio, between the network. Nobody wanted to see this show fizzle out. I think that it was everyone wanting to do the biggest service to the show that we could by going out strong. It just seemed like the writing was kind of on the wall as to when that was happening. Everybody kind of felt that it was coming soon, and so it was just taking that leap of faith of going like, 'Well guys, let's get out the paint and paint that finish line because what we've accomplished is unlike any other.'"

Now seems like the perfect time for Supernatural to stop. They recently celebrated hitting 300 episodes and had a blowout event, which brought back some old fan-favorite characters. By the time the series concludes, it will have a grand total of 327 episodes, which is a pretty hefty legacy for Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, and the rest of the cast and crew who have been there since the beginning when the show was originally on the WB network. A lot has changed since Supernatural made its debut.

One of the changes is the fact that Supernatural has one of the biggest cult fan followings around who are dedicated to everything that the show does. The fan community is pretty bummed that the show is ending, but many are looking forward to seeing what kind of surprises they include to bring Supernatural to a close. The 300th episode is going to be hard to top, but if the series is good at anything, it's pushing the envelope past what anyone ever imagined.

It is believed Supernatural Season 15 will premiere in October following the same pattern as the last seven seasons. A specific premiere date has not been revealed as of this writing. With that being said, the show will more than likely have a big presence at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, which is probably when the premiere date will be announced with some other surprises. While we wait for that information, you can check out the video of Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki at the Supernatural con below, thanks to SPN Con Girl's YouTube channel. The decision to end the show discussion starts at the 29:23 mark.
