We reported on Friday that CBS has issued a series commitment to Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler's Supergirl TV series, just two weeks after we first heard about the project's development. Today, DC All Access confirms the first plot details, also revealing that the show will change the character's origins from the DC Comics.

"The series will follow Kara Zor-El, a Kryptonian girl who's been hiding her powers here on Earth, but decides to embrace her powers, and become the hero she was always meant to be."

This description is almost identical to Deadline's plot rundown from Friday.

"Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she's been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be."

In the comics, Kara does escape Krypton and flees to Earth after her cousin Kal-El (Superman) was sent there by his parents. On Earth, Superman helps Kara control her abilities until she can create her own alter-ego, but it seems more likely that Superman will not be a part of this series at all. It's possible that Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler are making these changes to distance itself from The CW's Smallville, which featured Laura Vandervoort in a two-episode arc as Kara that mirrored the comic story line.

It seems this version of Supergirl will be left to figure out her own alter-ego and control her powers by herself, much like how Superman had to evolve by himself, even if it does stray from the comic book origins. There is also the possibility that the show may be adapted from Supergirl's New 52 comic book reboot, which doesn't include Superman but does mention her home planet of Krypton.

Of course, if this show does go on to be a hit, it's possible that they could introduce Superman at a later point in the series, crafting a new dynamic between the cousins that hasn't been seen before.
