It has only been a few weeks since production started on CBS' Supergirl, but the cast continues to grow. Ever since principal photography began, the show has added Malina Weissman as a younger version of Melissa Benoist's Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Kara Danvers, and Faran Tahir as The Commander, a military expert on aliens who tries to hunt down Kara. Today we have word from io9 that Owain Yeoman has signed on to play DC Comics character Vartox.

Vartox was created in 1974 by Cary Bates and Curt Swann, who has been portrayed as both a friend and enemy to Superman in the DC Comics. Most of his comic book appearances have come alongside Superman, so this could be yet another hint that the Man of Steel will have some sort of role in Supergirl. Vartox is just as powerful as Superman, but he can change his physical appearance at will. In the New 52 comic book reboot, Vartox was a sports broadcaster, but it isn't known which of the several different versions of Vartox will be shown in the series. In the comics, the character bore a striking resemblance to Sean Connery, and his name is said to be an homage to the actor's character Zed from the 1974 movie Zardoz.

If this report is true, Owain Yeoman joins a cast that also includes Mehcad Brooks (James Olsen), Laura Benanti (Alura Zor-El), Chyler Leigh (Alexandra "Alex" Danvers), Jeremy Jordan (Winslow "Winn" Schott) and David Harewood (Hank Henshaw). Dean Cain and Helen Slater have also joined the cast, and while their character identities have yet to be confirmed, it was recently rumored that they are playing Kara's foster parents. Owain Yeoman is best known for starring in two CBS shows, the sci-fi series Extant and the crime procedural The Mentalist. On the big screen, he recently had a role in American Sniper.
