This week's episode of Supergirl not only kicked off the Invasion crossover with Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, but it also marked the show's midseason finale. The back half of Season 2 will resume on Monday, January 17, and we know that at some point fans will be seeing the musical crossover between Supergirl and The Flash, but today we have word that an iconic DC Comics character will be surfacing as well. While we don't know exactly when he will surface, The CW has reportedly confirmed that Mr. Mxyzptlk will be appearing at some point this season.

ComicBook.com got confirmation from The CW that Mr. Mxyzptlk is showing up, although the character hasn't been cast at this point. The character will appear in two epiodes of Supergirl Season 2, but it isn't known exactly when these episodes will air. It also isn't clear if this villain will be interacting with Superman (Tyler Hoechlin), given their adversarial relationship in the comics.

In the DC Comics, Mr. Mxyzptlk was a constant nuisance for Superman, who would only appear sporadically to playfully mess with Superman. This character was only allowed into the DC Universe from his mysterious alternate dimension every once in awhile, whenever his dimension's "rules" would allow him to return. He was always forced back to his homeland by being tricked into saying his own name backwards. He was portrayed as a more serious threat in the New 52's Action Comics from Grant Morrison, although it remains to be seen which version of Mr. Mxyzptlk will show up on Supergirl.

Supergirl has already introduced a number of new characters this season, including Lynda Carter, the original Wonder Woman, as the President of the United States. Floriana Lima has also signed on to play Maggie Sawyer, the first ever openly gay comic book character, along with Katie McGrath as Lena Luthor. The CW Network show is also introducing Maggie Sawyer's girlfriend Kate Kane (Batwoman), and Barbara Gordon (Oracle), although they haven't been cast yet.

Last month, executive producer Greg Berlanti confirmed there will be a musical crossover between both Supergirl and The Flash this season, following both shows' crossover on CBS last season. Melissa Benoist and Grant Gustin both have musical backgrounds, appearing on Fox's hit musical series Glee before landing their DC Comics superhero roles. The producer confirmed that most of the songs will be covers, but there may be a few original songs thrown in as well. It hasn't been revealed exactly when this musical crossover will air.

After debuting the first season on CBS, Supergirl was renewed for Season 2 and shifted to The CW, where it now anchors the network's superhero lineup. Supergirl retains its same Monday 8 PM timeslot on The CW, with The Flash following on Tuesdays at 8 PM, Arrow on Wednesdays at 8 PM and Legends of Tomorrow on Thursdays at 8 PM. It isn't known if The CW is currently casting for the Mr. Mxyzptlk role or not. Hopefully we'll have details about more new characters coming aboard for Supergirl soon.
