When the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuted back nearly one year ago, many fans poked fun at the crossguard lightsaber used by the then-unknown villain, who was later revealed to be Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver. Ever since then, fans have been curious why this villain has such a unique lightsaber, but today, we have new details about this weapon. A Reddit user attended Disneyland's Season of the Force celebration that kicked off this weekend, where Kylo Ren's actual lightsaber is put on display. A sign next to the lightsaber reveals that it is actually an "ancient design," although Kylo Ren recently constructed it. Here's what the Disneyland sign reveals about this lightsaber.

"Kylo Ren's unusual lightsaber is an ancient design, although the one he carries was recently constructed. The crossguard blades, or quillions, are raw power vented from the primary blade."

These details only raise even more questions, though, since it isn't clear why this villain chose to employ an "ancient design" for his lightsaber, instead of going with a more modern approach. The Star Wars franchise has a long history of heroes and villains getting their hands cut off, so perhaps he chose this lightsaber to prevent his hand from getting cut off, but that is only speculation at this point. Hopefully we'll learn more about this weapon as we get closer and closer to Star Wars: The Force Awakens' December 18 release date.

Kylo Ren is part of the evil organization known as The First Order, which rose up from the ashes of the fallen Galactic Empire in the years following Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi. Very little is known about this organization, except that other villainous characters like General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson), Captain Phasma and Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) belong to the First Order. In one of the trailers, Kylo Ren is seen speaking to the burnt mask of Darth Vader, claiming he will finish what the dark Sith Lord started.

This villain is also part of a separate group of villains known as the Knights of Ren, although there isn't much we know about them thus far. A collector of Jedi and Sith artifacts, it is believed that Ren is on a mission to collect Anakin's original lightsaber. The blue lightsaber that Obi-Wan gave to Luke on Tatooine. The lightsaber that was lost on Cloud City during Luke's first epic battle against his father. Leia is said to be in the possession of the lightsaber now. Though it isn't known how she came to possess it. The first official poster by iconic artist Drew Struzan shows Finn wielding Luke's blue lightsaber. We don't yet know how he came to possess it either.

It has been rumored that Kylo Ren is searching for the blue lightsaber that Finn is seen wielding in the trailers and posters. One rumor claimed that a character known as The Vicar, rumored to be played by Max von Sydow. This rumor claims that the Resistance sends Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) to investigate the emergence of this lightsaber, and that he puts it inside of the ball droid BB-8, which is possibly how Finn comes into possession of the weapon, since he is often seen with BB-8. While we wait for more details on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, take a look at this display that reveals newdetails about Kylo Ren's lightsaber.
