Though J.J. Abrams isn't on as a director for the third installment, he is still the man responsible for the very successful reboot of the Star Trek film franchise that started back in 2009. For the third installment, Paramount has tapped Fast & Furious director Justin Lin to take on the Sci-Fi franchise, which will be coming out during the 50th anniversary year of the original series. With the release of the film closing in, Paramount released the second trailer for Star Trek Beyond, giving fans a much better look at what to expect from the sequel. With this came news of an epic event happening at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.

The new trailer premiered at a Star Trek fan event in Los Angeles. Aside from new footage, fans were treated to another exciting bit of information. It was announced at the event that Star Trek Beyond will have its world premiere at San Diego Comic Con this year on July 20. Not only will the film be shown publicly for the first time at SDCC, but those lucky enough to catch the screening will be treated to the world's first outdoor IMAX screening ever, which will also feature a live orchestra, just to put the icing on the already very excellent sounding cake. This will surely be one of the highlights of the massive event.

This new trailer is much more character driven than the first trailer was, which seemed to focus almost entirely on action and gave little to no idea about the plot of the film outside of the obvious. Fans had expressed some concern that it looked like Lin may have taken a very action heavy approach to the film with little substance, and this trailer seems to be a bit of a response to that. Each of the core crew gets their deserved screen time, we get much more interaction between the crew and some of the new characters as well as a much better look at Idris Elba's villain, Krall.

The plot will center around the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise being a couple of years into their five year mission, which has taken its toll. On the way to a Federation outpost to get some much needed rest, the ship is attacked by Krall in an attempt to display his hatred for the Federation. The crew of the Enterprise winds up scattered and in danger on a strange planet and must contend with Krall and his deadly forces. The trailer also teases that Captain Kirk, who is of course played by Chris Pine, is still living in his father's shadow and is having trouble coping and living up to the expectations that come with that.

Star Trek Beyond was written by Doug Jung and Simon Pegg, stars in the film as Scotty. The film also stars Zoe Saldana, Sofia Boutella, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, and Anton Yelchin and is set for a July 22 release. The film was directed by Justin Lin and produced by J.J. Abrams. You can take a look at the trailer and new poster below.
