As the awards season heats up, The Weinstein Company, who has at least one horse in the race with Lee Daniels' the Butler, is shifting its focus to scripted TV. The studio already has its hands in a couple of reality programs including Project Runway, but now its looking to produce a number of one-hour dramas, one of which may be a Sin City spin-off that comes on the heels of the theatrical release of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, opening across the country this August.
There are at least six shows in pre-production right now, including the 10-episode Book of the Dead, a detective drama set in ancient Egypt. Also, 10 Commandments, another ten-episode drama. It will feature one episode helmed by such big name directors as Wes Craven, Lee Daniels, Madonna and Ryan Coogler, each of which will tackle one of the commandments as handed down by Moses.
Also in the planning stages is a martial arts series for Netflix that centers on Marco Polo, and War and Peace, a 14-episode mini-series based on the novel, which is being produced for the BBC, along with Stan and Ollie, which looks at the later years in the life of comedy team Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The Weinsteins are also considering a comedy in the same vein as Entourage that follows celebrity chef Michael Chiarello.
The studio isn't just producing scripted series, though. It has also acquired a number of shows, including Peaky Blinders, a British crime series they hope to debut in America sometime next year. And Gomorrah, an Italian Mob Drama.
If it happens, the Sin City series will be produced under Bob Weinstein for his Dimension brand. Directors Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez are involved.
Already announced for MTV is a one-hour drama based on Dimension's hit horror franchise Scream, with a pilot episode directed by Wes Craven. And director Frank Darabont is planning a 10-episode series based on his sci-fi thriller Stephen King's The Mist.
Other non-Dimension movies that also might become series include Oscar winning drama Silver Linings Playbook and this December's August: Osage County.
