With The CW getting ready to debut Riverdale Season 2, which arrives October 11, the network is also making plans to expand the Riverdale universe with a new spin-off based on the iconic Sabrina the Teenage Witch character from the original Archie Comics, entitled The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Since the Sabrina character hasn't been introduced in Riverdale yet, it's possible that could happen in Riverdale Season 2, leading into this spin-off that is being eyed to debut in the 2018-2019 TV season. Here's the official description of the new series below.

"The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature, half-witch, half-mortal, while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit."

The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news, revealing that Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will write the pilot script, which is being eyed as a companion series to Riverdale. The writer will also executive produce alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Jon Goldwater and Lee Toland Krieger, who has been set to direct the pilot episode if the pilot moves forward. Berlanti Productions will produce in association with Warner Bros. TV.

There had been rumors that the Sabrina character would ultimately appear in Riverdale right away, since, in the series premiere, Jason Blossom was seen in Greendale, the town on the other side of the river from Riverdale, before his brutal death. Greendale is the home of Sabrina Spellman in the comics, although she hasn't surfaced on the show yet. Still, the series has featured other characters from the Archie Comics like Josie and the Pussycats. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who serves as the chief creative officer for Archie Comics, also teased at the TCA summer tour last month that other characters from the Archie Comics library could appear in the show, even mentioning Sabrina the Teenage Witch by name.

The Sabrina Spellman character has already been adapted for the small screen with Sabrina the Teenage Witch, which starred Melissa Joan Hart as the title character and ran for seven seasons between 1996 and 2003. This series will ultimately be much darker than that family-friendly show, and could open the floodgates for even more Archie Comics characters to debut in Riverdale, or to be developed for more spin-offs. The CW renewed Riverdale for Season 2 back in May, the network's only freshman series that was picked up for another season. The CW is also developing a Supernatural spin-off entitled Wayward Sisters, which will debut as a back-door pilot in the 16th episode of this season. While we wait for more details on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, take a look at the new artwork for the potential series, which is essentially the same as the debut artwork for the comic book series of the same name that debuted in 2014.
