It was just last week that Sitting President Barack Obama announced he'd go Running Wild with Bear Grylls, appearing on an upcoming episode of the survivalist series during his visit to Alaska. The episode has already been shot, and Today has a first look. Some were wondering to what extent the POTUS would be put through the wringer by Bear Grylls. As evidenced in the video clip, he didn't have to succumb to eating a urine soaked mouse, as Michelle Rodriguez did a few weeks back. But his meal still wasn't very appetizing.
As President, Barack Obama has his own personal chef who prepares each meal with loving care. And everywhere he goes around the world, he is catered to as any world leader might be. But set loose in the Alaskan wild with just a gritty survivalist at his side, those luxuries were no where to be found. Instead of dining on freeze-dried cranberries or a granola bar, Barack Obama and Bear Grylls had to settle for something a little less appetizing. But it really wasn't all that bad.
The pair discovered a discarded salmon carcass that had already been munched upon by a bear. Alaskan salmon is actually a delicacy, and a favorite among seafood enthusiasts. But the fact that this fish had already been jawed upon and manhandled by a set of grubby bear claws made it a little less appetizing. Though, it was nothing a nice, hot fire couldn't handle. It even cooked the beast's saliva into a nice honey glaze. Not one to step down from a challenge, Barack accepted his pre-chewed meal with grace and dignity, and thanks.
President Obama seemed happy to appear on Running Wild with Bear Grylls, expressing his excitement to finally be out of the office and not wearing a suit. This is what he had to say about the opportunity. And even explains that there's more than a couple of bears running loose on the show.
"As president, I am in what's called the bubble, and Secret Service makes sure that I'm always out of danger, which I very much appreciate, but it can be a little confining. Every once in a while, if I do something unexpected, the phrase we use is that, 'The bear is loose,' so to be with Bear in the woods, it doesn't get any better than that."
The President Barak Obama episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls does not have a set release date at this time. It is expected that the show will arrive sometime in the fall. Barack Obama's appearance on the show isn't just for fun. He does have an agenda in participating on the survivalist program. President Obama will be showing up to observe the effects of climate change on the area, and share that information with his country first hand. This will hopefully spark a bigger climate control conversation across the nation. He will be addressing aspects such as wildfires and the melting of glaciers. And he will explain how the government can better assist in the preparation of such events.
While this is the first survivalist show that Barack Obama has partaken in, he's no stranger to TV. He's made numerous talk show appearances, showing up on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Daily Show and more. He made entertainment headlines earlier this year when he agreed to appear on Marc Maron's WTF podcast. The difference here is that he is actively participating in a reality challenge, which will be unique. Running Wild with Bear Grylls ended its Season 2 run last night with special guest Drew Brees. It isn't known when Running Wild with Bear Grylls Season 3 will debut, and other than Barack Obama, no guests have been announced. It's possible that this particular episode of the show could air as a special, arriving before Season 3. While we await more info, take a look at this sneak peek.
