Netflix is planning to turn the 2001 indie comedy Wet Hot American Summer into a 10-episode TV series.

David Wain and Michael Showalter, who wrote the script for Wet Hot American Summer, will executive produce the series, which will reunite several cast members from the movie. The actors will all play characters in high school, despite the fact that many of them are over 40 years of age.

While it isn't known exactly who will return, the movie's cast includes Paul Rudd, Christopher Meloni, Molly Shannon, Michael Ian Black, Zak Orth, Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Amy Poehler, Joe Lo Truglio, Elizabeth Banks and Bradley Cooper, who made his feature film debut with the comedy.

Universal Pictures, which distributed the movie, is considering an option to board the series, although a decision has not been made yet. The series will move forward with or without Universal's involvement. The movie, which served as David Wain's feature directing debut, only made $292,000 during its theatrical run, but it quickly gained a cult following in the years that followed, with David Wain and Michael Showalter teasing a sequel that never happened throughout the years.

David Wain requested that Universal re-release Wet Hot American Summer on DVD in 2011, which would have included new special features for the movie's 10th Anniversary, but the director revealed in a Q&A that the studio was not interested.

"I told them we would be willing to do a new prequel teaser short for it and new interviews and new material but they were like, 'No, nobody buys it. Nobody cares.'"

In February 2012, David Wain revealed in an interview with The Playlist that he is writing the script for a theatrical sequel

"What I'm saying is we're writing the script and sort of making the initial preparations. No movie is a guarantee until it's in theaters. But we're at that stage of the process and we intend to make it. Can I guarantee that it's going to happen? Of course not."
