As you may have noticed, it has been over a year since the 12th season of Netflix's resurrected sci-fi comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000 last streamed a new episode. And today fans' worst fears have been confirmed by series creator Joel Hodgson who sent out an email to his MST3K mailing list passing along the lame news that season 13 isn't happening. At least not on Netflix.

Hodgson writes:

"As some of you might have guessed, we won't be making new seasons of the show for Netflix. However, I want you to know that we've had a wonderful time working with the Netflix team, and will always be grateful to them. After all, they gave us the opportunity to spend the past few years aboard the Satellite of Love, and made it possible for new generations to discover the joys of riffing cheesy movies with your friends."

As weak as this news is, Joel Hodgson seems to be in good spirits about the whole mess, continuing on to say:

"I couldn't be more grateful or proud to our incredible cast and our wonderful crew for bringing this incarnation of the show to life and hope that we'll get the chance to continue collaborating on MST3K as we enter our next chapter.

Finally, he reveals that he's so unshaken by this development because he is still dedicated to keeping the series alive and makes sure to remind fans that there are still lots of options to explore in the years to come. After all, if the powers that be behind the scenes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 know one thing, it's that being canceled doesn't mean the end of the line. In fact, Hodgson says that while this might be the end of the first chapter of bringing back MST3K, it's not the last.

Specifically, he writes:

"Now, I know you might have questions about the future of Mystery Science Theater, but as you've seen over the last four years, we are just as dedicated to keeping MST3K alive as ever. And I want to remind you that there are still lots of options for us to explore in the years to come. This isn't our first rodeo! So, while this might be the end of the first chapter of bringing back MST3K, don't worry: it's not the last chapter."

Now, as lame as it is to hear that Netflix has given yet another fan-favorite series the boot, truth be told, in the case of Mystery Science Theater 3000 it wasn't hard to surmise that this was the fate of the Netflix revival. After all, the first season sported a solid 14 episodes while the second season was only given a paltry six, count 'em out, six episodes. I don't think I need to tell you that that is a pretty massive drop in output. Again, it wasn't a good sign. But here's hoping that whatever happens behind the scenes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 they find themselves a new streaming home soon. In the meantime, this unfortunate update comes to us from Den of Geek.
