Last month, we reported that ABC Family has issued a series order for their Mortal Instruments TV series entitled Shadowhunters, based on Cassandra Clare's best-selling novel series. Today, Deadline confirms that McG has signed on to direct the pilot episode and serve as an executive producer on the series. While best known for recent films such as 3 Days to Kill and This Means War, the filmmaker has also directed pilot episodes for Fastlane, Chuck and The Mysteries of Laura.

The series follows the adventures of Clary Fray, who finds out on her 18th birthday that she is part of a long line of Shadowhunters, half-human and half-angel hybrids who are tasked with hunting demons. After Clary's mother Jocelyn is kidnapped, she is brought into this mysterious world by Jace and his best friend Simon, as she begins a journey of discovery while living among faeries, warlocks, vampires and werewolves. Production on the pilot is slated to begin this May in Toronto.

Ed Decter wrote the pilot script and will serve as showrunner on Shadowhunters, while executive producing alongside McG. Cassandra Clare's first novel was previously adapted for the big screen with 2013's The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, which starred Lily Collins as Clary Fray. McG also recently directed another pilot for ABC Family, Kevin From Work, a single-camera comedy that was recently picked up to series.
