Better lock your doors and windows! The Mist is creeping into TV from Dimension Television. This sci-fi horror series will be based on both the Stephen King's classic novella and the feature film from director Frank Darabont. At this time, no cast members have been announced. And it isn't known if Frank Darabont will return to direct one or more episodes.

Coming off the success of the recently renewed Scream TV series on MTV, Dimension Television announced today that they are resurrecting The Mist in a similar fashion. The project, which has Stephen King's blessing, is a continuing series from acclaimed writer Christian Torpe. Christian Torpe created the successful show Rita in Denmark, which is now finishing its fourth season. Christian Torpe has also been developed programming for both Showtime and AMC.

Using the book and movie as influences, The Mist series tells an original story about a seemingly innocuous mist that seeps into a small town but contains limitless havoc. From psychological terrors to otherworldly creatures, the mist causes the town residents' darkest demons to appear forcing them to battle the supernatural event. More importantly, it creates a war between the residents themselves that may prove to be even more deadly than this outside threat. About the series, Bob Weinstein, co-chairman The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films, had this to say.

"The terror and drama in Stephen King's novella are so vast that we felt serialized television is the best place to explore them in greater depth. With this show, Christian has created a fascinating band of characters and a story with infinite scares."

Megan Spanjian, VP of Scripted TV, Matthew Signer, EVP of Production and Creative Affairs, and Keith Levine, SVP of Production and Development will oversee the project for Dimension TV.  The Mist has not landed at a particular channel yet, and it isn't known if this will be prepped as a much more violent cable offering or a network exercise in restrained sci-fi violence and gore. Despite its sometimes graphic themes, CBS actually turned out to be a good fit for Stephen King's Under the Dome.

The Mist was published as the first and longest story of the horror anthology Dark Forces in 1980. It would later be edited and republished in 1985 as part of Skeleton Crew. It was later republished as a standalone paperback when The Mist opened in 2007. The movie performed well at the box office and generated positive reviews. It starred Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden, Andre Braugher, Toby Jones, Jeffrey DeMunn and William Sadler. It isn't known if any of the original characters will be repurposed for the TV series. Stay tuned, as more is surely to follow.
