Michael McKean has joined the cast of AMC's Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul, as the first brand new character who didn't originate in the flagship series.

The actor will portray an attorney named Dr. Thurber, who has come down with, "an unusual affliction," according to Deadline. Thurber was one of six new regular characters revealed in a March report. The other characters yet to be cast are Burt, a "Kennedy" type lawyer from a prestigious firm, another lawyer named Beth, Eddie, a Spanish-speaking career criminal and 20-something twin brothers Zack and Eddie, both of whom are skateboarders.

He joins a cast that includes Breaking Bad stars Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks, who reprise their roles as the shady lawyer Saul Goodman and his private investigator/fixer Mike Ehrmantraut.

Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan co-wrote the pilot script with Peter Gould, with the spin-off slated to debut sometime in November on AMC. Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul revealed last month that he wants to come back as Jesse Pinkman in the spin-off, although Dean Norris revealed in March that he likely can't come back, due to his commitment to CBS' Under the Dome.

Michael McKean will next be seen in the indie film Tumbledown.
