Even before filming started earlier this year on Logan, there had been a number of rumors that the popular Marvel Comics mutant Laura Kinney, a.k.a. X-23, will be featured in this story. When production got under way, there were set photos that showcased an unidentified young girl alongside Hugh Jackman, but it was never confirmed to be X-23. Today, both director James Mangold and the movie's official Instagram account sent out a new photo of actress Dafne Keen as Laura/X-23. Logan marks Dafne Keen's feature film debut, after starring in seven episodes of The Refugees TV series.

The Instagram photo only says "Laura," and while the actress isn't identified, Dafne Keen is listed on Logan's updated IMDB page as Laura Kinney/X-23. Many fans assumed that X-23 would be a part of this story, after the post-credit sequence of X-Men: Apocalypse showed a mystery character entering the Alkali Lake facility to procure a vial of blood labeled "Wolverine." In the comics, X-23 is a clone created from the blood of Wolverine.

X-23, a.k.a. Laura Kinney, was created by Craig Kyle for the animated TV series X-Men: Evolution, making her debut on the show in 2004. She soon transferred over to the comics, where she was further created by both Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, who went on to write the scripts for Thor and Thor: The Dark World. X-23 was cloned from Wolverine's DNA, and her name comes from the fact that she was the 23rd attempt at creating a clone, and by far the most successful. Much like Wolverine himself, X-23 has regenerative healing abilities and retractable adamantium claws, along with superhuman strength, speed, agility, reflexes and heightened senses.

We know the movie will be partially based on the iconic Old Man Logan comics, with Logan (Hugh Jackman) losing his mutant healing abilities. The previous photos revealed through social media featured Stephen Merchant's Caliban, Patrick Stewart's Professor X and one of the Reavers, played by Stephen Dunlevy. There have also been a slew of cryptic images featuring various locations around El Paso, Texas, and what is believed to be a glimpse at the comic book character Arcade. One of the most prominent rumors includes the involvement of an iconic mutant named X-23.

The cast also includes Boyd Holbrook as the villainous Donald Pierce, along with Richard E. Grant and Eriq La Salle in unspecified roles. James Mangold directs from a script by David James Kelly and Michael Green, with 20th Century Fox setting a March 3, 2017 release date. As of now, this mutant adventure will go up against Lionsgate's drama The Shack. Now that the trailer is released, hopefully we'll have more details about the plot of Logan soon.
