Last month, we reported that Netflix is in the early stages of developing a TV show based on the popular Nintendo video game The Legend of Zelda. The report claimed that Netflix is "working closely with Nintendo" for the series, described as a fantasy adventure similar to Game of Thrones, but one the whole family can enjoy. Today, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata spoke with Time, claiming that the story from last month is not true. Here's what he had to say below:{@@@newline@@@}{@@@newline@@@}

The Legend of Zelda started as a video game for the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), which has spawned more than 20 new games for various console platforms. The original game follows a young boy named Link, who goes on a journey to save Princess Zelda in the fantasy world of Hyrule. Nintendo has always been very protective of its video game properties, with only a few adaptations that were allowed over the years. The Legend of Zelda animated series debuted in 1989, but only lasted one season before it was canceled. The only feature film adaptation Nintendo allowed was the infamous 1993 bomb Super Mario Bros. starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo.

Satoru Iwata's comments don't necessarily mean that The Legend of Zelda show isn't happening at all, but don't hold your breath for the series to debut on Netflix, or anywhere else for that matter, anytime soon. While most video game adaptations have traditionally failed at the box office, there are a number of properties currently in development, such as Assassin's Creed starring Michael Fassbender, which, if proven to be successful, could turn the tide for video game adaptations, in both movies and TV.
