We may have to wait more than a year for the live-action version of Justice League to make its way to theaters. What's maybe worse is that after Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, we can't be totally certain it will be great or that Zack Snyder has been able to course correct. Never fear! Because we do have a new DC Comics animated show to look forward to in the form of Justice League Action and Cartoon Network has finally announced a premiere date.

Cartoon Network has finally set a firm premiere date for the animated series, which will be December 16. So, if you're not making it to theaters to see Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, you can stay home and watch Justice League Action. The first episode of the series will be called "Shazam Slam" and Cartoon Network has released the synopsis for the episode.

"In "Shazam Slam," the villainous Black Adam battles Batman on the Rock of Eternity and unleashes a horde of Djinn determined to turn the Earth back to its pre-human, volcanic state. Affected by the otherworldly powers of these primordial monsters, Batman becomes possessed and is turned into a giant flying Batmonster laying waste to the Hall of Justice, with only Superman capable of taking the fight to the Dark Knight. One by one, the Justice League - with the help of Shazam (voiced by Sean Astin) and The Wizard (voiced by Carl Reiner) - must hunt down and defeat each Djinn in order to yet again save the world from destruction."

So it sounds like Justice League Action is going to be starting off with a big bang. Not only has Cartoon Network roped in Kevin Conroy, who has been voicing Batman for more than 20 years, to voice the character in this new show, but they have some great guest stars for the first episode. Sean Astin of Lord of the Rings fame voicing Shazam seems very fitting and legendary director Carl Reiner as The Wizard is another home run, at least on paper. The series will also feature other big name voice guest stars such as Mark Hamill returning as Joker, James Woods as Lex Luthor and Diedrich Bader as Booster Gold.

The recent live-action adaptations of DC Comics properties have left a little something to be desired by many, the animation side of things has absolutely killed it over the years. Justice League Action is shaping up to continue that legacy. The first episode was shown over the summer at San Diego Comic-Con and was met with very positive response. This series will be shaking things up just a bit, though. The show will be going the route of Regular Show, Teen Titans Go! and other such Cartoon Network shows with 11-minute episodes. Short, sweet and to the point.

Justice League Action will feature the three pillars of the DC Comics universe every week in the form of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman with a rotating cast of characters from DC every week. The first episode airs on Friday, December 16 at 6 p.m. ET. In case you missed it, you can check out the highlight reel from Comic-Con for Justice League Action below.
