There aren't a whole lot of specifics about Jurassic World 2 released right now, but the pieces are starting to come together. The cast for the movie has been one of the biggest mysteries, but today we got a potentially disappointing update. Jake Johnson, who played control room operator Lowery Cruthers in the first Jurassic World, will not be returning for the sequel.

A fan recently asked Jake Johnson flat out on Twitter if his character would be returning for Jurassic World 2. While he didn't rule it out completely, it pretty much seems like Lowery will be sitting this one out. Here is what he had to say.

"From what I hear Lowery will not be in JW2."

Jake Johnson brought a lot of levity to Jurassic World and was a fairly important character in the movie, especially in the third act. However, given what we do know about Jurassic World 2, it sort of makes sense that his character wouldn't be returning. Lowery was someone who worked at the park and after what happened at the end of the first movie, there is no way a functioning dinosaur Disneyland is going to be part of the equation in Jurassic World 2. So, outside of a brief appearance of some kind, it really wouldn't make much sense for Jake Johnson to reprise his role this time around.

Aside from the news that Jake Johnson won't be returning for Jurassic World 2, we know that both Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are set to reprise their roles, which seems like a no-brainer, especially in the case of Pratt. Colin Trevorrow has also teased that the first sequel to Jurassic World won't be sticking to dinosaurs chasing people around on an island. The franchise needs to go to new places and it looks like those new places will be out in the real world. We say first sequel because Jurassic World 2 is intended the be the second installment of a new trilogy.

It is also likely that the idea of militarized dinosaurs will also be explored further in Jurassic World 2, as many of the embryos made it off the island with InGen. In terms of casting, the only other news we have heard is that a casting call was put out for a young girl named Lucy, who it looks like will play a big part in the movie. In terms of plot, the movie is said to deal with the way we treat animals in the real world. Perhaps more importantly for fans, director J.A. Bayona has promised the movie will be darker and scarier. Here is what he had to say in a recent interview with EFE.

"It will be darker and scarier than the previous film. Obviously when you have Chris Pratt, it will also be very funny. But it will be darker. It is a second step in a trilogy, and the second step is always dark as in The Empire Strikes Back or the Wrath of Khan,' which are the examples you always get. The film takes the story where it has never been before. To me, it surprised me. We are going to places where the saga has never been before, and at the same time we are paying tribute to the franchise. We will take it a step further. There are things that will happen that people are not expecting and they really are shocking."

Colin Trevorrow, who directed the first Jurassic World and helped propel it to $1.67 billion worldwide, has taken a step back and will not be directing Jurassic World 2. Instead, it is A Monster Calls director J.A. Bayona who is stepping in to fill that role. Trevorrow is staying on as a producer and is also co-writing the movie with his longtime collaborator Derek Connolly. Jurassic World 2 is currently set for a June 22, 2018, release date.
