There are some big changes in store for Homeland as it enters Season 5. Episode director Alex Gansa was at the opening night of PaleyFest, where he revealed that the series will be jumping two and a half years forward in time. He also teased that Claire Danes's Carrie Mathison will no longer be with the CIA. The show is also moving to Europe, with the location most likely to be Germany. After offering this sneak peek at the next new episodes, Alex Gansa declared:

"OK, that was bigger than I intended. I can't say another word."

Carrie Mathison spent most of Homeland Season 4 in Pakistan. This brought criticism from Pakistani officials who were upset with the way their country and government were portrayed. The storyline implied that Pakistani officials are aiding the Taliban. The final episode of last season returned Carrie to Washington D.C.

While Carrie experiences dramatic changes in her career, there were no further giant plot reveals. It was not revealed whether or not Rupert Friend will return as Peter Quinn in Homeland Season 5. And no start date for production was handed out. Alex Gansa did note that writers Alex Cary and Chip Johannessen will not be returning in the upcoming season. It was asked how extremists and the threat of ISIS might play into new episodes. Gansa says:

"That's the challenge every year. Front and center (is) what's happening in Syria and Iraq. As Alex (Cary) and Chip said, we try to humanize our villains and our adversaries. People down there are difficult to humanize and to understand. How do we dramatize - do we give them a platform? I don't know."
