The hit BBC series Luther came to a close last month after three critically-acclaimed seasons. Series creator Neil Cross revealed that he is now working on a movie prequel that he hopes to make sometime next year, with Idris Elba returning as the title character.

Neil Cross has already written the screenplay that follows John Luther's early career as a detective, when he is still married to Zoe (Indira Varma). The final scene of the movie will be the first scene of the TV series, where John Luther returns to the Serious Crime Unit after serving a seven-month suspension.

Earlier this year, Idris Elba had this to say about the prospect of a Luther movie.

"We do want a new audience, but we also want to keep the fans interested, so we have to tread very carefully."

It isn't known if Neil Cross plans on directing this untitled movie or not. Neil Cross has already written a prequel novel entitled The Calling, which centers on the case involving a child killer that results in Luther's seven-month suspension.
