Variety reports that HBO has picked Laura Dern and Mike White's Enlightened for a series order.

This single-camera half-hour show stars Dern "as a self-destructive woman who has a revelatory experience at a treatment center after she suffers a nervous breakdown."

Enlightened also stars Diane Ladd (Dern's real-life mom), Luke Wilson and Sarah Burns. HBO has placed an order for nine episodes (in addition to the pilot).

"I am stoked to finally party with HBO," White stated. "I feel lucky to have been given this opportunity to make something original, heartfelt and weird."

Production is set to begin this summer.

The Enlightened pilot was written and directed by White. It was created from a story by White and Dern.
