It was reported in early September that Gaumont International Television was developing a series based on the iconic Silence of the Lambs villain Hannibal Lecter, made most famous by actor Anthony Hopkins. Today, NBC has picked up the rights to this potential hourlong drama series.

Bryan Fuller will write, and executive produce Hannibal alongside Martha De Laurentiis. NBC has ordered a 13-episode commitment from Bryan Fuller, which means the project won't go through the pilot stage, but straight to series if NBC likes the script.

The project is moving full steam ahead, and could be ready by Fall of 2012. Martha De Laurentiis has produced three previous Hannibal Lector movies, including Hannibal Rising, Red Dragon, and Hannibal.
