As HBO gets ready to air Season 5 of Girls, the cable network has also been discussing how to bring the critically-acclaimed series to a close. E! Online reports that HBO executives and the show's producers agreed to renew the show for a sixth and final season. Girls Season 6 would air sometime in 2017, but the show hasn't issued an official announcement yet.
Girls Season 5 is slated to debut Sunday, February 21 at 10 PM, kicking off a new 10-episode season. While no specifics were given for the final season, it isn't a surprise that HBO is considering an early renewal, before Season 5 even airs. The network renewed the series early for the past two years, shortly before the current season was about to air.
Created by and starring Lena Dunham, the Emmy-winning series Girls is a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their 20s. Lena Dunham leads a cast that includes Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, Adam Driver, Alex Karpovsky, Andy Rannells, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jake Lacy. It isn't known when production may begin on Season 6 at this time.
Adam Driver can currently be seen in the worldwide blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens, portraying the nefarious Kylo Ren. It hasn't been confirmed if he is returning for the follow-up Star Wars: Episode VIII, which is slated to start production in London later this month. It isn't known if this movie will affect his production schedule for the final season of Girls, but we'll have to wait and see. Lena Dunham did tease in a September interview that they are already thinking about how to wrap up the show. Take a look at what she had to say in this interview excerpt.
"Never say never, but that is the way that we're thinking about it right now, and we're starting to think about sort of how to wrap up the storylines of these particular young women. I started working on this show when I was 23, and now I'm going to be 30 so it kind of feels right that this show kind of sandwiched my 20s and then I go off into the world."
Lena Dunham executive produces Girls along with Judd Apatow, Jennifer Konner, Ilene S. Landress, Bruce Eric Kaplan, Murray Miller and Paul Simms.
