HBO has debuted the first trailer for Girls Season 5. And boy, are things getting complicated. Friendships are drifting apart, as they do in life. And some challenges are greater than others. In this sneak peek, we get a look at what's in store. And it includes new boyfriends, a wedding, a trip to Japan, and the return of Adam Driver. It's going to be intense, hilarious, and the dawn of something new.

Girls appears to be answering a question that has plagued fans for over five years now. Namely: Why the hell are these people still friends? When we first met this gang in 2012, they were a close-knit group. Not so much any more. In the past couple of seasons, each individual has drifted apart from the core. And it's been a bit disconcerting.

These Girls have become so disenchanted with each other's lives, that they barely share connecting story lines on the hit HBO dramedy series about love and friendship, and the occasional romance that gets tied up and tangled within it. Season 5 seems to be pushing that conceit to a natural, realistic conclusion. And it all begins with Hannah.

Lena Dunham created Girls. And she is still at the heart of its quirky ways, playing Hannah, a writer who's frustrations continue. She previously got caught up with her boyfriend, left for grad school, only to drop out, and has since tried to find new purpose. She has two college friends named Marnie (Allison Williams) and Jessa (Jemima Kirke), who both dove into new work endeavors while trying to cope with a lifetime of personal hang-ups. And then there is Jessa's cousin Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet), who has only ever skirted around the show's edges. Now, it seems she will find new purpose in Japan.

Watching the Girls drift apart plays into the realistic nature of the show, and makes perfect sense. These ladies need to evolve, and being distracted from one another is what would naturally happen in real life. Now, with Shoshanna headed overseas, it appears that Marnie will be getting married. And Hannah? She's going to have to suffer the trials and tribulations of dealing with a new boyfriend. It should set the stage for what could be the greatest season of the show yet.

Created by and starring Lena Dunham, this Emmy-winning series is a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their 20s. Lena Dunham executive produces along with Judd Apatow, Jenni Konner, Ilene S. Landress, Bruce Eric Kaplan, Murray Miller and Paul Simms. The cast also includes Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, Adam Driver, Alex Karpovsky, Andrew Rannells, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jake Lacy. Girls returns for Season 5 on Sunday, February 21 on HBO.
