The ending of Game of Thrones left a lot of fans unsatisfied, but according to one of the stars of the series, an alternative ending was filmed. Known for playing Tormund Giantsbane on the hit HBO series, actor Kristofer Hivju recently spoke about the show's controversial ending.

Specifically, Hivju says the cast and crew had actually filmed an alternate ending, though it sounds like we aren't supposed to know about it and it's unclear if the footage will ever see the light of day. When asked about the Game of Thrones series finale ending, Hivju had this to say:

"'Well, we shot an alternative ending. That was mostly for fun but I don't know if I'm allowed to tell you about that."

When pressed to reveal additional details, Hivju clammed up by responding:

"I won't tell you! But it was fun."

Prior to reading the scripts for the Game of Thrones final season, Hivju had come up with many of his own theories for how the show could end. Factoring in the fan theories from viewers across the world, the actor explains how there were "thousands of theories" out there and a lot of people had their own idea as to how to conclude the series. As for what happened, Hivju admits he was just as surprised as most everyone else. "There was the element of surprise which I liked," Hivju said about the Game of Thrones finale.

The showrunners and creators of the TV series, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss came under heavy fire from Game of Thrones fans in response to the way they ended the show. Critics agreed, and the final three episodes of the show are among the lowest-rated of the series on Rotten Tomatoes. Angry fans had even made a Change.org petition to remake the entire final season with new writers, and the movement managed to collect over 1.8 million signatures. It's rumored the backlash even contributed to Benioff and Weiss departing the Star Wars franchise. Still, despite the criticism, the show won big at the Primetime Emmy Awards for its final season, which included a win for Outstanding Drama Series.

For better or for worse, Game of Thrones is over, but that doesn't mean we've seen the last of the franchise. After passing on a Game of Thrones prequel series led by Naomi Watts, HBO put in an official order for another prequel series called House of the Dragon. What we know about the story so far is that it will be set about 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones with a particular focus on the ancestors of House Targaryen. The network is clearly much more confident in this particular pitch, as they've gone ahead and ordered a full 10-episode season. There's no word yet on a possible release date, but the series is definitely happening.

Time will tell if we ever see this "fun" alternate ending for Game of Thrones. Even if it's nothing more than a joke ending with Hivju getting the throne instead of Bran, chances are, many fans would still prefer it over the televised ending that we got. This news comes to us from Metro.
