Before BBC America's Doctor Who comes to Comic-Con this year, Entertainment Weekly has debuted the first photo from Season 9, which doesn't have a premiere date set yet. This photo features Peter Capaldi as the Time Lord, standing outside of the TARDIS in a desolate landscape, and it seems the good doctor is quite perplexed by something. When asked about what's happening in the photo, Peter Capaldi had this to say.

"The photo shows the Doctor about to make a mistake that has cataclysmic repercussions."

When asked to tease the Doctor Who Season 9 premiere, entitled "The Magician's Apprentice", Peter Capaldi went onto reveal that it will have a few nods to the 1960s.

"It places the Doctor in a conflict that is central to his being, as well as containing some subtle tributes to the '60s, and truly wonderful guest performances."

The actor also talked about how the new season will be different from Doctor Who Season 8, hinting at the new monsters fans will see, including the return of Missy, played by Michelle Gomez.

"He's throwing himself into life with a newfound hunger for adventure. He's in pursuit of joy and grabbing every thrill that he can along the way. But I sense him running from something, that even he does not yet understand. There is an epic sweep to this season and I think the villains and monsters reflect that. Great new ones, brilliant old ones, and some very scary creatures looming in stories with real emotional ambition. In the hands of Michelle Gomez, Missy is more magnificently bad than ever before."

Back in March, we reported that Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams will have a guest-starring appearance this season, although nothing was revealed about her character. Peter Capaldi did reveal a tiny tidbit bit more while speaking quite highly about the 18-year-old actress.

"Maisie Williams is fantastic. A sharp, talented tornado. As an 18-year-old, she has taught me many new words and expressions. All I'll say about her character is she shifts in cosmic ways."

Before she was ultimately confirmed to return for this new season, Jenna Coleman had considered leaving the show. When asked if this will be her last season, Peter Capaldi said, "I hope not," and then teased how the doctor and Clara's relationship evolves this season.

"They've suddenly realized that they are the most fortunate people in all of time and space and are hellbent on adventure. Jenna continutes to deliver a beautifully nuanced, complex, and funny performance that marks her out as one of the best companions ever."
