In a story from The Hollywood Reporter, Dixie Carter has (Designing Women) passed away at age 70.

The actress died Saturday morning, according to publicist Steve Rohr. He represents Carter and her husband, actor Hal Holbrook. He did not offer the cause of death or where she died. Carter had lived with Holbrook in the Los Angeles area.

"This has been a terrible blow to our family," Holbrook stated. "We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy."

A native of Tennessee, Carter was most well known for playing wisecracking Southerner Julia Sugarbaker for seven years on Designing Women, the CBS sitcom that was on TV from 1986-93.

Carter's other credits included roles on the series Family Law and Diff'rent Strokes.

In addition to Holbrook, Carter is survived by daughters Mary Dixie Carter and Ginna.
