The Netflix streaming service has unveiled the first look at the upcoming anime TV series Devilman Crybaby, which is slated to debut in spring 2018. The anime series will be available in 190 countries or territories, with nine spoken languages and 25 subtitle languages. The series is based on the beloved manga series which launched in Shonen Magazine back in 1972.

The story centers on the main character Akira Fudo, who hears from his best friend Ryō Asuka that the demons will revive and reclaim the world from humans. As humans have no chance against the demons' power, Ryō suggests combining with a demon. This leads to Akira becoming the Devilman, an entity with the power of a demon and the heart of a human. Netflix hasn't announced any of the voice cast members quite yet, but now that this trailer has been released, that announcement may be coming soon.

Masaaki Yuasa (Ping Pong the Animation, Mind Game) is directing the anime series through his Science SARU studio. Ichiro Okouchi (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Valvrave the Liberator) is writing the new series, with Eunyoung Choi serving as animation producer. Aniplex and Dynamic Planning are producing the project. The series is based on Go Nagai's manga series, with the author and Masaaki Yuausa set to appear on a talk show at the Anime Japan convention on March 25 to discuss the new Netfilx series.

The original manga series spawned an anime TV series of the same name in 1972, although it would only last for one season. An animated TV mini-series based on the manga debuted in 1987, and in 2004, the Devilman live-action movie debuted in Japanese theaters, although it didn't receive a theatrical release in the United States. Fans in Japan will be able to stream the original 1972 TV series and the 2004 movie on Netflix as well.

Netflix is also streaming the 2015 anime movie entitled Cyborg 009 Vs. Devilman in 190 countries around the world. It isn't clear at this time when Netflix plans to announce more details about this Devilman Crybaby anime series, but hopefully we'll be hearing more about this series in the weeks and months ahead.
