Just last week, Sigourney Weaver teased that she was watching a lot of Marvel movies and TV shows. At the time, no one knew why she made the statement, but it sure had a lot of fans speculating that the iconic actress may have joined the MCU. Today, we have a confirmation that this is very much true. And she is set to play a key role in this cinematic universe.

That's right, the legendary actress, known for such hit movies as Alien and Ghostbusters, is officially a member of the Marvel family. And she will be making her presence known in the upcoming Netflix miniseries The Defenders. The show already has a stellar ensemble cast, with the leads from all four main Marvel Netflix shows appearing together.

Netflix made the Sigourney Weaver announcement Saturday during a New York Comic-Con panel in support of Iron Fist, the fourth and final Marvel Netflix series that leads into The Defenders. Weaver is said to be playing a significant role as the main villain. But her character has gone unspecified. So, let the speculation begin! Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television, said this in a statement courtesy of TVLine.

"Marvel is honored to have an actress of her caliber and status join what is already our biggest show ever! She is by definition a class act."

Said Cindy Holland,Vice President of original content at Netflix.

"Sigourney Weaver, what more is there to say. She's a formidable actress and we are thrilled to have her join our remarkable cast alongside Charlie, Krysten, Mike and Finn."

At the end of the Marvel panel, all of the Defenders arrived on stage. This included Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock/Daredevil) from Marvel's Daredevil, Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones) from Marvel's Jessica Jones, Mike Colter (Luke Cage), and Finn Jones (Danny Rand/Iron Fist). The Defenders will begin shooting later this year. It will premiere on Netflix in 2017.
