Deadpool is one of the most anticipated movies of 2016, and in a surprising turn of events, the cast and filmmakers behind the movie haven't been shy about sharing its secrets. Still, at that, it's easy to assume that this entire movie takes place on a bridge. Today, we get two new photos and a ton of story details that dispute that. As it turns out, offering up plenty of behind-the-scenes details to satiate fans has actually enabled the director and his cast to keep quite a bit of the movie shrouded in mystery.
The latest two photos show Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson both in and out of his iconic Deadpool costume. The first image has Wade about to go on the operating table under the watchful eye of Gina Carano's Angel Dust and Ed Skrein's Ajax. While the second photo shows the leading man having a deep on set conversation with director Tim Miller. A group of journalists got to hang with the duo on set earlier this year. And they've brought back new information on certain cameos that we can expect, Easter eggs to keep an eye out for, how Colossus gets to keep his Russian accent, and just why this superhero adventure needs an R rating.
Maybe the most interesting fact about Deadpool, which we've heard about before, is that it will break down the fourth wall to directly acknowledge the 2009 spinoff X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The movie introduced Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with the Mouth only to sew his lips together and silence him. This new movie will make fun of that entry in the franchise, and will disregard everything that happened in it. Also of note, there will be an end credit sequence. While no details were revealed, it was planned on set while the film was shooting and is described as 'very cool'.
While 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four reboot was one of the very few Marvel titles to abandoned Stan Lee, Deadpool will not follow suite. There will be a Stan Lee cameo, and it might be the best one yet! We already know thatX-Men Colossus makes a cameo, but he has a substantial role in the movie. He is described as a 'gateway drug' to the rest of the X-Men universe. And for the first time in the franchise, he'll get to speak with a Russian accent.
Wade Wilson will use his guns in the first act, and his Katana swords in the third act. As we all know by now, the movie has an R rating. Deadpool will not shy away from graphic depictions of violence, and is a bloody affair. But it does not dwell on the viscera and gore. About what we can expect in terms of the R rating, star Ryan Reynolds had this to say.
"[There are] pretty racy, pretty hyper-violent things that happen in this movie and it's been a lot of fun to shoot."
Though her character will eventually become Copycat, Morena Baccarin's Vanessa will not have any superpowers in this first movie. Like Cable, that is all being saved for the inevitable sequel, of which the cast and crew deeply believe will happen. If you've read the script that leaked online years ago, you will see at least 70% of that old draft in this new version of the material. It is described as the same 'basic' movie. And in terms of the muscles we see on Ryan Reynolds when he's wearing the costume? That's 100% him. The original costume had some muscles built in, but the actor was too ripped once he climbed into the suit, and all the fake body accouterments had to be yanked out. But as a nod to creator Rob Liefeld, the pouches have been left in.
Deadpool does take place in the X-Men universe, and it is possible that he'll show up in other movies. In terms of writing the script, this did change who they were able to reference, such as the Blackbird and Professor X. Mutant characters such as Angel Dust and Negasonic Teenage Warhead were easier to utilize in the story, as they were lesser known Marvel characters and didn't need as much approval in terms of the larger X-Men universe. In fact, Angel Dust is in so few comics, the writers, along with star Gina Carano, had to make up a lot of her backstory and practically create the character from scratch. She serves as Ajax's henchman. Colossus, on the other hand, required a lot of approval, as he still has to fit within the larger X-Men cinematic universe. Colossus and Angel Dust will have an epic fight at some point in the movie.
In terms of the Deadpool soundtrack, it will be a compilation of 80s and 90s hits, which will play a big part in the movie. Some of these songs are a bit unusual, and some people may thing it's a slight ripoff of Guardians of the Galaxy. In fact, Ryan Reynolds says he had a 'mild heart attack' when he saw what that movie was doing in terms of its Awesome Mixtape. But he assures everyone that these music cues were written into the script a long time before that Marvel Phase 2 movie hit the big screen. There are also going to be a ton of Easter eggs to look out for, including references to a number of Fox owned mutants.There may even be silhouettes of other X-Men characters.
There's a lot of stuff we actually won't see in Deadpool. The movie was originally going to introduce Cable. But the filmmakers decided to wait until the franchise was on its feet before establishing such an important character and the idea of X-Force. It's possible that he'll show up in the sequel. Garrison Kane and Wire were also almost in the movie. Perhaps they'll show up for the sequel, too? So, what do you think?
