With just five weeks left in the NFL season, the countdown to Super Bowl 50 continues, as the playoff picture starts to become clearer. While we won't know who will be playing in the big game until next month, a new report from Deadline reveals the popular rock group Coldplay will be performing during the Super Bowl halftime show. The Super Bowl news is expected to be officially announced during tonight's Thursday Night Football match up between the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions on the NFL Network.

The site reports that Coldplay won't be the only musical act performing during the 20-minute halftime show, with CBS reportedly planning to showcase multiple acts that will span different musical eras, to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of this sporting event. It isn't known if any of the other musical acts will be announced during Thursday Night Football tonight, so stay tuned for more details. Super Bowl 50 will be broadcast live on CBS Sunday, February 7, from Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, home of the San Francisco 49ers.

Earlier this year, Super Bowl XLIX became the most-watched TV program in U.S. history, with over 114.4 million viewers tuning in to watch the New England Patriots come from behind to defeat the Seattle Seahawks 28-24. Ironically, the halftime show drew in even bigger numbers, with 118.5 million viewers watching musicians Katy Perry, Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz perform. Those number also broke the record for most-watched halftime show, besting 2014's performance lead by Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which drew in 115.3 million viewers.

The news comes just one day before Coldplay releases their seventh album, A Head Full of Dreams. 2016 also marks the 20th anniversary of the band's formation, so it's possible that fans will hear some of the group's biggest hits during the halftime celebration, along with their new single "Adventure of a Lifetime." The band has sold more than 80 million records since first forming in London in the fall of 1996.

CBS announced last month that it will give Late Show with Stephen Colbert the coveted post-Super Bowl slot, the first time a late-night talk show has ever aired directly after the big game. A special episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden will directly follow Late Show with Stephen Colbert. It hasn't been announced who will appear on both of these late-night shows yet, directly after the big game, so stay tuned for more updates.
