HBO announced back in December of last year that Big Little Lies was going to return for a second season and confirmed that show producers Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon were coming back. Today, HBO revealed that Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoe Kravitz were confirmed for Season 2. The casting news follows the announcement that Academy Award winning actress Meryl Streep will be joining the cast of Big Little Lies Season 2 as Mary Louise Wright, the mother of Alexander Skarsgard's Perry Wright character.

Shailene Woodley returns as Jane Chapman, with Laura Dern coming back as Renata Klein, and Zoë Kravitz back as Bonnie Carlson. Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are receiving a significant salary bump and will reportedly make around $1 million an episode for Big Little Lies Season 2. Returning co-stars Kravitz, Dern, and Woodley will reportedly get raises as well. Alexander Skarsgard is also rumored to return in some capacity, which more than likely means there will be some type of flashbacks since his mother is now on the show.

Though some fans were not too excited to see the limited series return, the reveal that the original cast is back for all 7 of the brand-new episodes should elicit some excitement. Big Little Lies is based off of Liane Moriarty's 2014 book of the same name and the first season told the whole story. So, some fans were disappointed to see that the show was coming back without anymore of Moriarty's original story. However, Moriarty is currently writing a follow up story for Season 2, but it isn't confirmed if it will be released as a novel.

Big Little Lies was the big winner at the 2018 Golden Globes, which were held in January. The show won Best Limited Series, Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role (Laura Dern), Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Alexander Skarsgard), and Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series (Nicole Kidman). Though the decision was made well before the awards to bring the series back, it certainly doesn't hurt that it cleaned up at the Golden Globes for setting up a successful Season 2.

There currently is not a release date set for Big Little Lies Season 2, but it more than likely will not come out until 2019 at the earliest. And as far as the story is concerned, we know that it will pick up right after the tumultuous events of Season 1, which will be very interesting. The official synopsis claims that "loyalties will erode," so it doesn't seem like everything will be as happy as everything seemed at the end of the last episode for very long.
