HBO's Big Little Lies has officially started filming for the second season, which was announced late last year. Fans of Liane Moriarty's novel were very happy with the way that the supposed limited series told the story, but had mixed emotions when it was announced that a second season was in the works, since they finished off the book's storyline. However, Liane Moriarty has been working on a new story based off of the characters from the book to return, which has some fans pleased and others still skeptical.

Zoe Kravitz and Shailene Woodley both took to Instagram to share pictures of themselves that announced that Big Little Lies Season 2 has started filming. It wasn't until the middle of February that we found out Woodley and Kravitz had officially signed on for Season 2 and now, a little over a month later and production is in full swing. Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Adam Scott, James Tupper, Gordon Klein, and Iain Armitage are all returning as well, with rumors that Alexander Skarsgard will return for flashback scenes.

Academy Award winning actress Meryl Streep has joined the cast for Season 2, playing Mary Louise Wright, who is Perry Wright's (Alexander Skarsgard) mother. This is the main factor that many believe will see Skarsgard make a return for Big Little Lies Season 2. Additionally, the cast all seem like a pretty tight-knit family, which is why the whole thing is coming together for a second time. It doesn't hurt that the first season was a huge hit and cleaned up big time at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards.

David E. Kelly is returning as a writer and has been writing episodes based in part by Liane Moriarty's new storyline that she whipped up for Big Little Lies Season 2. There's still no real details that have been revealed about Season 2, but it appears that things don't stay very happy for too long after the final scenes of the first season. The arrival of Perry Wright's mother is sure to make some waves and a short synopsis states that "loyalties will erode." It was clear from the beginning that Big Little Lies was not going to come back with a happy, feel-good version for Season 2.

HBO has not announced an official release date for Season 2 of Big Little Lies, but now that filming has officially started, more news should be imminent. It seems that 2019 will be the very earliest that we see the show, which means that fans will have some waiting to do before the Season 2 premiere, which is something that they will have in common with fans of HBO's Westworld who have had to be pretty patient for Season 2.
