In the aftermath of a bidding war, Fox has picked up a new live-action Batman series from The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller titled Gotham.

The series will center on a young Commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made the city of Gotham famous. In the show, James Gordon is a detective with the Gotham City Police Department and has not met Batman yet. The superhero will not appear in the series. Casting details have not been announced.

Based on the character created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, James Gordon debuted in the first Batman comic in 1939. He has been used as a regular character in many projects including Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy starring Gary Oldman, and in the 1960's Batman series which featured Neil Hamilton as this iconic DC Comics character.
