Jeffrey Dean Morgan Wants Back on Supernatural as John Winchester

By Brian Gallagher — September 29th, 2017

As fans wait for the return of The CW's long-running hit series Supernatural, which kicks off Season 13 on Thursday, October 12 at 8 PM ET, a beloved former cast member has hinted at a potential return, at some point. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who played the Winchester family patriarch John Winchester in the first season of the hit series, revealed during a convention appearance Q&A that he would love to return to the series and reunite with his on-screen sons, Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester) and Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester). Here's what he had to say during the Q&A below.

"We talk about it all the time and I've been saying it for years because it's Supernatural and you can come back, as proven by every actor that's ever been on the show. I certainly hope that at some point not only will John return in some capacity. But I think that Sam and Dean need to have some closure with this guy and I think that John would like the opportunity to have some closure, and I think you, the audience, deserves it."

Jeffrey Dean Morgan does have a point about actors coming back, with this past season bringing back The Winchesters matriarch Mary Winchester (Samantha Smith), although she was taken to a different world and trapped by the devil in the Season 12 finale, and it remains unclear when she'll be reunited with her sons. As for John Winchester, he appeared in the entire first season of the show, before he was killed off in the Season 2 premiere, sacrificing himself by giving up his soul to save Dean's life. He also had a brief, non-speaking cameo in the Season 2 finale, and lent his voice to an episode in Season 3, but we haven't seen or heard from John since then.

Towards the end of Season 12 this past spring, the show paid a fitting tribute to Jeffrey Dean Morgan and alluded to his new role as the iconic Walking Dead villain Negan. Towards the beginning of the episode entitled Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell, Sam and Dean return from a previous battle, with Dean holding a very familiar bat wrapped in barbed wire, with Dean stating, "Man, Dad loved this thing," before setting the bat on a table. The bat was a replica of the infamous "Lucille" bat wielded by Negan, with the stars even showing the bat in set photos a few months earlier, telling Jeffrey Dean Morgan on Twitter that they found this bat in the trunk of the Winchester's iconic Chevy Impala, which lead to a humorous exchange between the actors on social media.

As for John Winchester's return, there is no official indication that he will be brought back for Supernatural Season 13. It's also worth noting that last year, both Jensen Ackles and showrunner Robert Singer strongly hinted that Supernatural may end in 2018, with the 300th episode. The 300th episode would be the 13th episode of Season 14, which would mean that the final season would be a shortened one, with the series then coming to close likely at the end of 2018. Still, that end game has yet to be confirmed, and this new report from TV Guide doesn't offer any clarity on the matter either. Still, even if the show does end with the 300th episode, there is still plenty more of the Winchester Brothers' adventures to hit the small screen between now and then.
