Star Wars Rebels Season 4 Won't Show Rogue One Battles

By Ryan Scott — April 18th, 2017

A whole lot of big news dropped over the weekend during Star Wars Celebration, but one of the biggest reveals came when it was announced that the beloved animated series Star Wars Rebels will end after its upcoming fourth season. Since the show will be leading right up to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, many have wondered if we will see the battles from the movie retold in Star Wars Rebels from that perspective. Creator and Executive Producer Dave Filoni has put that to bed, saying that the battles of Rogue One won't be taking place in Star Wars Rebels season 4.

The man behind Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars spoke with /Film during Star Wars Celebration in Orlando about the upcoming final season of the show. When asked if he would be recreating the battle of Scariff that took place in Rogue One, he definitively said that won't be happening, but for good reason.

"I don't think that would be right. It would be to hinge this series end on a battle we've already seen the outcome of in a feature film. It would be a little bit repetitious, anticlimactic. I think as an initial impulse it sounds great. But the more you think about it, you go hmmmm I don't know, it would kind of taper your expectations and the tension would be cut quite a bit. I like our ending. And I love that battle. I think it would be neat to see that battle one day from the Ghost's perspective because we know the Ghost is there, but we don't know who is in the Ghost. So that's kind of a good question that needs to be answered."

It was a reasonable question, but Dave Filoni had pretty solid answer for not wanting to rehash the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in new Star Wars Rebels episodes. But since there were a ton of Rebels Easter eggs in Rogue One, such as the Ghost being in the battle of Scariff, many thought that Star Wars Rebels could conclude with those battles. However, it sounds like we are going to see an entirely different story and conclusion to that story in Star Wars Rebels season 4. Dave Filoni added that the planet Jedha won't be making an appearance in the show this upcoming season either because it didn't line up with the story they are trying to tell.

"Anything's possible in Star Wars storytelling, I've learned that lesson. Ever since we brought Darth Maul back, I learned that lesson. I think we have a certain specific task ahead of us and with respect to that film, we wanted things like Jedha to be very special for that movie when it came out. It's a wonderful sandbox they've created over there but you know, it's not something I could really play with in this series at this point. We have our own Jedi mysteries that we've been wrapping our head around on this show."

We already got our first look at Star Wars Rebels season 4 with the first trailer debuting during the Star Wars Celebration panel. Even though we won't be seeing any of the major Rogue One battles revisited, we will be seeing the return of Saw Gerrera and Mon Mothma, as well as what looks to be an epic last season of the series. The premiere date for Star Wars Rebels season 4 has not yet been announced, but it will be returning this fall on Disney XD and the final season will consist of 15 episodes.
