Penguin and Riddler Will Go to War in Gotham Season 4

By Brian Gallagher — August 7th, 2017

The Gotham Season 4 trailer that debuted at Comic-Con revealed that The Scarecrow is coming this season, but there is another battle brewing between two of the show's longstanding and iconic villains, The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) and The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith). The stars explained in new interviews that we'll see much different versions of these characters heading into Season 4. Here's what Robin Lord Taylor had to say about the dynamic between Penguin and Riddler.

"We know that Ed escapes and that is an extremely terrifying moment for Oswald because, again, Oswald when he's at his lowest its when he has no control. Nygma is the only person who could meet Oswald on his level in terms of intellect and cunning. Now that he cannot control him anymore it's terrifying and threatening to him."

Comic Book also spoke with Cory Michael Smith, who hints that his character Edward Nygma, a.k.a. The Riddler, still respects The Penguin. The actor went onto say that Ed is one of the few people who actually understands Oswald, and vice versa. Here's what Cory Michael Smith had to say about this unique relationship.

"I think that there will always be respect between the characters. I think their relationship was so personal and intimate, I don't know that there's another character that understood Ed the way that Oswald did and I think vice versa. So I think there's such a connection there and such a fear of the other and a respect of the other that that will constantly be there."

Season Four of Gotham will witness the emergence of the criminal landscape for which Gotham City is best known, with Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) at the forefront of the fight against the most depraved and unhinged villains. While Gotham City fights for normalcy, a new hero will rise, as Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) begins to assume responsibility for the city's well-being. This season will also mark the introduction of a new character, Sofia Falcone, who will be portrayed by Crystal Reed. Sofia Falcone is the daughter of Don Falcone. Strong, intelligent and calculating, she has run the Falcone operation in the south over the last 10 years. She's returning to Gotham to help Gordon take down Penguin. Crystal Reed played "Allison Argent" on Teen Wolf for three seasons. She received back-to-back Teen Choice Award nominations for the role and won the Young Hollywood Award for Best Cast Ensemble. Reed will next be seen in acclaimed French director Pascal Laugier's film, Incident in a Ghost Land, which will be making the festival rounds later this year.

Gotham is based upon the characters from DC Comics and is produced by Warner Bros. Television. Executive producer Bruno Heller wrote the pilot, which was directed and executive-produced by Emmy Award nominee Danny Cannon. John Stephens serves as an executive producer and showrunner on the series. Fox announced last month that the Gotham Season 4 premiere will air earlier than expected, with the new season debuting Thursday, Sept. 21 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), one week earlier than originally announced.
