Earlier today, I was invited down to the Fox lot to watch the American Horror Story: Asylum season finale "Madness Ends". While I won't spoil the fun for you, lets just say that some people die, and others actually live.

We were joined by series creator Ryan Murphy, who offered some tantalizing tidbits about Season 3. Back in November, FX renewed the series for Season 3 and confirmed Jessica Lange will be back to star. Ryan Murphy revealed that Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters are also returning, although he would not divulge any specifics regarding their characters.

The series is, without a doubt, one of the darkest shows on television. Ryan Murphy teased that next season will be funnier, and that it will take place in several different cities.

"I want to do something next season that's funnier. I really miss that Jessica Lange as Constance (from Season 1) stuff, and I know she missed it too. The only thing I'll say about that it is a mixture of several cities. It's really about female power, and I got Jessica to do it because I did everything she asked. I also told her she will have complete hair and makeup, and the best designer gowns ever. She said, 'Please don't put me in a whimple again.' She's going to play a real glamour cat lady in Season 3. I'm just now meeting up with a lot of actors, so I don't want to say too much, but they're actors that Jessica wants to work with. She's sort of become a non-credited producer on Season 3. She loves doing the show, and I think she loves the 13-episode nature of it, so she can go do films and theater. It's a modern-day story next season"

He also said that there will be a few actors from Season 1 coming back for the new season.

"I will say that, for Season 3, we're going to have some actors from Season 1 who will return. I like that idea."

He also teased that he knows who Sarah Paulson is playing in the new season, but she does not know her character's identity yet. The executive producer also gave a hint about who Evan Peters may be playing in Season 3.

"At the end of last season, Evan said to me, 'I cannot sob anymore. Please don't make me do it. I want to play somebody more buttoned-down and less emotional.' That was in the back of my head when we were coming up with Kit Walker, which was a very different character for him. But, next year, he'll probably go back to being a sobbing psychopath."

Ryan Murphy indicated that the upcoming season will have an historical aspect, while featuring a 'horror romance' as well.

"I think that what Season 3 is about is more historical in nature. I'm also interested in getting into a horror romance. That's certainly something that's going to be in the water for Season 3. I think Season 2 was really cool, and it was really about something cultural and social, but it was very dark, and very unrelenting, and that was by design. I think you'll see a very different tone in Season 3."

Season 1 had Rubber Man as its horror icon, and Season 2 had Bloody Face. When asked if he had a particular horror icon in mind for Season 3, Ryan Murphy gave a brief but intriguing response.

"We do have a great icon, and it's a woman."
